In 1977, the film city was built by the state government to facilitate production and shooting of films and other media. The plan for this city included numerous structures, recording studios, lakes, gardens, theaters, sets and others.

In 2001, the film city was named Dadasaheb Phalke Nagar to honor the work and life of Dadasaheb Phalke, the first producer, screen writer and director of the country.

Bollywood Film City is not open to the public. Prior permission is required for guided tours through the region. The official tour of Bollywood city takes place on a bus.

The bus runs through the streets of this Film City and you can spot all the sets and even catch a movie during shooting. Every day, six tours are arranged by this official tour.

Beyond this, there are numerous tour agents who provide private and group tours through the Film City. The Film City is open from 10:30 am to 5:30 pm but, the timing and duration of each tour vary based on the service provider.

The best time to visit Film City is while a major film is in the shoot. However, determining that is next to impossible unless you have an inside man.

In terms of climate, summer is quite harsh due to the tropical climate, and monsoon is flooding.

Winter is the pleasing time to visit and enjoy Mumbai including Film City. October to March is the wintertime.

Within a day, the evening and early morning slots of tours are best than other timings. Most of the sets and shooting spots will be cleared out during mid-day for lunch and refreshments.

How To Reach Film City Mumbai

More than 900 films were shot in this destination and needless to say, it is the most important attraction and landmark in Mumbai.

Thus, every cab driver and rickshaw puller would know this landmark. This familiarity makes it easier for tourists to hire transportation from any part of the city to the Film City.

If you are looking for an economical way to reach the destination, the metro train is the best option. The closest metro station is the Goregaon Station. You can find trains from Churchgate station or any other station on the western line to Goregaon Station.

From the Goregaon Station, the Film City is a few kilometers away, and you can find rickshaws and cabs from the station to the gates of the Film City. You can also buses from many parts of the city to Goregaon.

Remember that no public or private vehicle gets access to Film City. Only authorized tour buses can enter into the region.
