History of Haji Ali Dargah

Along with a mosque, this place is a memorial of Sayyed Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari. He was a Muslim Saint and Merchant as well. After travelling all around the world he earned a lot of Money. There are various stories explaining why he came here.

In the middle of the 15th century, he came here and settled down in the port region of the Mumbai for the rest of his life.

One of those stories is- Oil women and Haji Ali Peer. She was earning her livelihood from selling oil.

But one day she accidentally split her oil in the street. After seeing this, she started crying. Haji Ali noticed her crying and came to her. She told him the reason, why she was crying? He went to the place and jabbed his fingers into the soil. Oil started to come automatically from the earth. Women put the oil and headed her way after thanking him.

After this incident, he started suffering from the nightmares of injuring the Mother earth. Haji consulted with her mother and came to Mumbai with his brother. Later he sent his brother and wrote them he will live in Mumbai as a Saint.

He spread his religion and he got his last breath during the holy travel of Mecca. He told his followers instead to bury throw his body in the sea water. They did so and water took his body in the middle of the sea.

After some time, sea water took his body to the place where he started his preaching. They built a tomb there and in the 19th-century mosque was built there as well.

How to Reach Haji Ali Dargah

By Train : This place is well connected via train route. One can reach here from the Mahalaxmi Station, Byculla Station and Mumbai Central Station. Central Station is 3km distanced from the mosque.

By Sea : Dargah is situated near the Worli Sea link. You can get there by cab or any other water transport mean.

By Air : Mumbai airport is the perfect destination for the persons love to fly. Mosque is only 20 km away from the airport.

Best Time to Visit Haji Ali Dargah

Mosque is open for the tourists throughout the year. But the time from October to March considered as the best time to visit here. Tides remain lower in the winter and you can visit in the Mosque.

For enjoying the rituals you can pay a visit here during any Islamic festivals including Eid or Ramjan. Don’t forget that you can’t get access to the mosque while tides are high in the sea.
