Being representing the finest and most sophisticated architecture of Mughal era, Taj Mahal is one of the remarkable buildings in the world. The complex of Taj Mahal consists of five major sections, which are the main gateway or Darwaza, the gardens or Bageecha, the mosque or Masjid, the rest house or Naqqar Khana and the last but not the least is the chief mausoleum or Rauza.
The magnificent building covers an area of 42 acres. At the end of its watercourse is situated the main gateway adorned with calligraphed verses from the Holy Quran. There is a central domed chamber, constructed in between 1932 to 1938.
The construction of this beautiful mausoleum, which took 22years to complete involved 22,000 of workers which included masons, inlayers, stonecutters, carvers, calligraphers, painters, dome-builders and others. These artisans were appointed from all over Iran and central Asia.
The monument represents the unique blend of architectural styles such as Persian, Islamic, and Indian architectural styles that beholds the attention of the spectators.It was constructed in such a way so that the splendor of the structure would not decrease even after decades of its creation. The structures by its sides add to the charm of the monument through the architecturalwonder.
The huge gateway of the monument has a unique door carved out of solid silver. The purpose of building the door was to prevent people from staring the tomb from anywhere else unless they are at the gateway itself. The chiefdoorway of Taj Mahal stands with a vertical symmetry, bordered with Arabic calligraphed verses from the Quran, which was made of black stone.
The chief tomb of Taj Mahal stands erect on a base of square platform.This platform has been raised above the riverbank by 50 meters. It was leveled with dirt, which resulted in the reduction of seepage from Yamuna River. There are four minarets built on each corner of the square platform. These minarets enhance the main domed building, which are detached andof 137 feet.
The garden of this beautiful monumentis laid within an area of 300 meters. The garden known as Char Bagh, according to Islamic belief is as paradise garden as it has been designed like the paradise described in the holy Quran. The pathways intersecting each other dividethe garden into four equal quarters. There are 16 flowerbeds and each bed consists of 400 plants.Therefore, the garden is considered as a tranquil place in the entire complex and a perfect place from where beautiful pictures of the tomb can be taken.
The tombs of Mumtaz Mahal and Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan (after his death) are sheltered by a crypt inside the Taj Mahal.The false tombs are built above these tombs in the main chamber and to transmit light to the chamber holed marble screens or jhajjhari are built.
Under the skilled designer Ismail Khan the dome was constructed whereas, the whole monument was designed by a Persian designer Ustad Isa Khan Effendi. The marble used to create this splendid mausoleum was brought from Makrana near Jodhpur, Rajasthan and the precious stones from distant lands.
Note:The specific feature of Makrana white marble is that it changes its shades with the variations of light. At the time of sunrise the Taj Mahal looks pinkish, it turns milky white in day light and in moonlight it turns golden.
