How to Explore Bhutan in Just 10 Days

Are you planning to visit Bhutan? If you are planning to enjoy 9 or 10 days in Bhutan, here is a simple itinerary to keep in hand. This is a very flexible and generic itinerary and you are welcome to add similar attractions nearby or remove things that you don’t enjoy from the itinerary.

Days 1 - Nature View

No matter which country you are from, you would be reaching Bhutan through Paro International Airport; if you are flying. The airport is located about 7300 feet above average sea level. The first thing you need to do is to accumulate more energy in your body to handle the altitude and cold. Find any traditional Bhutanese restaurant and have a lunch or dinner. You are now in Thimphu City of Bhutan.

If you are arriving before late morning, you can relax in your hotel room and visit Motithange Takin Preserve for some natural sightseeing. There are a lot of small attractions on the way too. Your next stop should be the Buddha Dordenma statue at Buddha View Point. It is one of the largest in the world. You can also get a panoramic view of the whole city.

Do not pile a lot of things on the first day. You would be obviously tired with the travel and thus, take it light. If needed, you can shift the natural park and view point to day 2 and take up some lazy shopping on day 1.

Day 2 - Explore Thimpu Forts and Museums

Start with some shopping if you hadn’t shopped on day one. If you are an early riser, give a visit to Centenary Farmer Market. It is open only during weekends. Else, you can start with sightseeing of Thimpu. The best of all attractions in the city are its museums. Top museums to enjoy are National Folk heritage museum, National Textile museum, Paper factory and others.

By late afternoon, stop by at National Memorial Chorten for some meditation. If you are not a fan of meditation, you can do some exploration at Simtokha Dzong fortress. According to legends, a very evil demon was prisoned inside it. You can find carving and paintings of ancient Bhutan. This fortress is located a little outside the city. If you are looking for something inside the city, try Thimpu Tashichho Dzong.

Day 3 - Enjoy Paranomic View of Mountain - Punakha

Ask anyone and they would recommend you to visit Punakha from Thimpu. The reason is the aesthetic effect of the route that connects the two destinations. You would be passing through the Dochula Pass, which gives a good view of the Himalayan Mountains. You can find a lot of memorials and other attractions on the path.

Halt at Punakha Dzong for some picnic time and sightseeing. You ought to visit the medieval city in the place. Other important attractions inside the city include Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten. Do not miss walking on the suspended footbridge.

Day 4 - Visit Religious Temples of Bumthang

Your next destination is Bumthang. This valley is filled with temples. Your first temple visit should be Tamshing Goemba. Later, visit Kurjey Lhakhang, Jambay Lhakhang, Jakar Dzong and many others. If you are visiting in the month of October, you can witness a lot of celebrations.

By late afternoon, hike to Thangbi Lhakhang. The only mode of transportation to this place is walking. But, the trip is worth the view that you get from Thangbi Valley.

Day 5 - Attractions of Gangtey

From Bumthang, start your travel to Gangtey. You would be crossing Trongsa in the middle. Halt there and visit Wangchuck monarchy temple. You can find many attractions in Gangtey like watchtower, memorabilia, Royal heritage museum and others. Take a long rest in the evening or enjoy some shopping.

Day 6 - Exploration of Wildlife Preserve

Travel towards Gangtey Valley is one of the important attractions in the country during winter. You can find a lot of rare migration birds. The valley is a wildlife preserve where you can find a lot of birdwatchers.

Over the hill, you would find Gangtey Goemba, a monastery. Tourists are welcome to visit and explore the monastery. Even if you had booked a hotel, find a farmhouse and stay for a night. It would be an interesting experience here.

Day 7 - Experience of Paro Valley

Travel back to Paro Valley where you can enjoy Jomolhari mountain, Rinpung Dzong, Catilever bridge, Ta Dzong, watchtower, National Museum and others. This is the right place for shopping souvenirs.

Day 8 - Hiking to Taktsang Monastery

Start early and hike to Taktsang Monastery. It is more than 10,000 feet above average sea level. This is a moderate level activity, which should be avoided by groups with young children. Exploring the monastery and returning to your hotel room would take most of the day. Take rest for the remaining part of the day.

Day 9 - Drukgyal Dzong - An Interesting Ruins

Hire a vehicle and enjoy a drive to Drukgyal Dzong where you can find interesting ruins. It is also an important spot for panoramic view and sightseeing. Visit Kyichu Lhakhang temple, if time permits.

Day 10 - Return with Beautiful Memories

Keep the day relaxed to check any nearby attractions. Since you are in Paro, it would be easier to reach the airport for your departure flight. If you are ready, you can spend a little more time in Bhutan.
