The majestic white building of Agra called Taj Mahal is well known as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. This marble mausoleum is located on the bank of River Yamuna in Agra. Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in order to house his favorite wife’s tomb built this amazing structure.
Mumtaz Mahal was a Persian princess and her name was Arjumand Banu Begum before marriage, who became the third and most favorite wife of Shah Jahan. The queen died while giving birth to their 14th child. Therefore, Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz constructed this marvelous structure and tried to make his love immortal.
Taj Mahal enrolled its name in the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1983 as it represents the rich Mughal culture and immense architectural beauty. It is famous worldwide as a symbol of love. This wonderful monument changes various shades with the changing time of the day. In the morning, when the sun rises it looks pinkish, it turns milky- white in the evening and it becomes golden in moonlight.
The construction of major mausoleum was completed in 1643 using white marble and studded with semi-precious stones but work on other parts of this project continued for ten more years. Therefore, the whole complex of Taj Mahal complex was completed in 1653. The total estimated cost of the construction is around 32 million Indian rupees.
Under the supervision of Ustad Ahmad Lahauri a board of 20,000 artisans and 1,000 elephants were appointed for the construction project of Taj Mahal. The complex consists of domed marble tomb, the lush gardens along with two red-sandstone buildings which are encircled by a separated wall on its three sides.
The artisans, masons, inlayers, stonecutters, carvers, calligraphers, painters and dome-builders were called from every part of India, Central Asia and Iran.
