Kashi Mahakal Express Train - Indore to Varanasi

Kashi Mahakal Express is a new train introduced on Mahashivratri, running between Indore and Varanasi. The train was inaugurated on 16th February 2020 and was started off by Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India. This is of the more than 50 projects launched by PM in Varanasi, at the cost of INR 1250 crores. The train started its maiden journey on 20th February, 2020 with the signal from Shankar Lalwani, MP of Indore.

The train connects many destinations and religious sites of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Kashi Mahakal Express is a fully air-conditioned superfast train. On its maiden journey, 612 bookings were done by 7 pm, 19th February. This amounts to 90% of the total capacity. According to officials, the demand would only increase over time.

When Kashi Mahakal Express Launched?

After the success of the two runnings Tejas Express between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, and between Lucknow and New Delhi, the Indian railways has started the third service; the Kashi Mahakal Express. Kashi Mahakal Express Train launched in Feb 20, 2020.

Seat Reserved For Lord Shiva

The train’s B5 coach has a small shrine. The seat 64 of that coach is dedicated to Lord Shiva and will be kept reserved for the almighty in the days to come, too. The authorities have placed pictures of lord Shiva on the seat and have plans to conduct prayers and offerings on special occasions and auspicious days.

Destinations Covered By Kashi Mahakal Express

The train connects three main Jyotirlingas (Shiva temples). The train route covers Omkareshwar (closer to Indore, Madhya Pradesh), Mahakaleshar (in Ujjain, MP), and the Varanasi’s Kashi Vishwanath Temple (UP). It also connects the commercial and educational spots of Bhopal (capital of MP) and Indore.

Kashi Mahakal Express Route

The train route covers 1131 km between Indore and Varanasi (via Lucknow) and 1102 km between the destinations while running via Prayagraj of Allahabad. Both the routes span for around 19 hours. During the route via Lucknow, the train halts at stations like Sultanpur, Lucknow, Sant Hirdaram Nagar, Ujjain, Kanpur, Jhansi, and Bina. During the Prayagraj route, the train stops at Allahabad, Bina, Kanpur Sant Hirdaram Nagar, Jhansi, and Ujjain in both directions.

No concessions are provided for the tickets. A child below the age of 5 can travel without a ticket. The train fare is also said to be dynamic. IRCTC reserves the right to determine the ticket price. The ticket price includes the meals during the travel.

Kashi Mahakal Express Schedule

The train service runs three times a week in each direction. There are two trains per week between Varanasi and Indore via Lucknow and one train via Prayagraj.

Train 82401 – Kashi Mahakal Express Varanasi to Indore : Starts from Varanasi on Tuesdays and Thursdays (2:45 pm). The train reaches Indore on day two, at 09:40 am.

On the return journey, the train is 82402 – Kashi Mahal Express (Indore – Varanasi). The train starts from Indore on Wednesdays and Fridays at 10:55 am and reaches Varanasi by 6 am on day two.

Train 82403 – Kashi Mahakal Express runs between Varanasi and Lucknow via Prayagraj. This train runs once a week. The train starts from Varanasi on Sunday 3:15 pm and reaches Indore on Monday 9:40 am.

On the return route, train 82404 –Kashi Mahakal Express starts from Indore at 10:55 am on Mondays and reaches Varanasi on Tuesday at 5 am.

Kashi Mahakal Express is the first long-distance luxury train under Tejas Express category. Thus, IRCTC has taken pains to create a very comforting and luxury ambiance. The train comes with a long list of facilities and amenities.

The train coaches are fitted with LED lights. Each coach is secured by two private guards and light devotional music is always played in the background. The officials have promised that this would be full-service overnight train. The stalls are dressed in yellow payjama and kurta and sport a rudraksha chain around their neck to blend with the theme. The seat numbers are also in braille to aid visually impaired passengers.

Tickets for the train are available to booking via the IRCTC web portal or via IRCTC Rail Connect, the mobile app. The train tickets can also be booked through any authorized travel agents or partners of IRCTC. You can pre-book your train tickets up to 120 days in prior. The train has foreign tourist and general booking quotas.

Kashi Mahakal Express Cancellation Policy

The booking for passengers in the station will be open for tourists from 4 hours prior to the departure to five minutes prior to the departure. In case of cancellation of confirmed and waitlisted e-tickets, the passengers will be provided a full refund, automatically.
