Him Darshan Express Train Kalka to Shimla - A Vistadome Train

On Wednesday, Indian Railways announced a new train, Him Darshan Express, which would run between Shimla and Kalka. The started its maiden journey on Christmas of 2019 carrying 90 passengers from Kalka to Shimla railway station. The train runs with 6 first-class AC coaches with Vista-dome and one coach for first-class chair car and luggage room. During its maiden journey, the train started its trip at 7 am from Kalka railway station and reached Shimla at 12:55 pm. The train is expected to run until December 2020.

The Him Darshan Express is noted for its modern AC vista-dome first class coaches. These coaches have glass rooftop to enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding as the train runs towards the destination.

Him Darshan Express Fare

The train ticket fare is announced as INR 630 per head per route. No form of concession is accepted in case of booking the first class vista-dome seats. The tickets for vista-dome coaches can be done via manual counter booking and online reservation system. For the first class chair car, the booking can be done only via manual counter booking at Shimla and Kalka stations.

Him Darshan Express Timing

The train starts from the Kalka railway station at 7 am and reaches Shimla railway station by 12:55 pm. On the way, the train halts at one station at Barog. On the return journey, the train starts at Shimla railway station by 15:50 and reaches Kalka by 21:15. The speed of the train is kept between 20 and 14 km per hour, throughout the trip. The train runs 7 days a week (once in each direction).

The train provides top-notch features and luxury amenities like liquid soup, odor fresheners, cushioned wooden décor interior, and others. The glass top coaches are the first of its kind in this route. The train has seven coaches in total. Out of those seven, six are reserved for glass top coaches and one for sitting chair and luggage room.

Him Darshan Express Seating Capacity

The train has six coaches for first-class AC vista-dome coaches and one first class chair car. In total, the train can hold 104 passengers during one trip. Each visa dome coach has 15 seats. Out of those, ten are window seats (five on each side) and five are aisle seats. Do you know that the dome coach was planned to have 35 seats, but was reduced to 15 to avoid congestion?

Panoramic view from Him Darshan Express

The train’s main feature is the vista-dome found in the first class AC coaches. The coaches have glass rooftop to get a panoramic view of the regions as the train runs through. If the season is very sunny, the train has window roller and honeycomb blinds to shunt light.

Sightseeing from Him Darshan Express

The seats in the coaches are reversible to adjust the seat in the direction of the train. This gives a comfortable view for sightseeing from inside the train. As the train runs between Kalka and Shimla, the tourists can enjoy green meadows, valleys, pristine villages, and much more.

At Kalka, the train runs 640 m above sea level and it reaches 2,060m above sea level, when it reaches Shimla. The train also runs through pine forests, sceneries of Shivaliks, and others. Thanks to the panoramic view, you can enjoy breathtaking sceneries throughout your journey. The train takes a little more than 5 hours to reach the destinations, and thus you can have five hours of beautiful sightseeing experience.
